Hancock 6th graders went beyond the walls of the classroom in science and engaged in global citizenship by leading a school wide fundraiser, “Dollars for the Dig,” to support the Gilbert Rotary Club’s international effort to bring running water to families in need on the Navajo Nation. Nearly 40% of Navajos live without running water and the Gilbert Rotary club is working with the nonprofit Dig Deep to provide families with a solar powered home water system. Our 6th graders worked diligently to spread the message by giving class presentations to the lower grades, doing school announcements and creating promotional posters they hung throughout the school. Another local club, the Sun Lakes Rotary Club, was inspired by their effort and offered to match the money raised up to 1,000 dollars. When the students spoke at a recent club meeting to thank the Sun Lakes Rotarians, members were so moved that they generously donated an additional $440. In just a week, the 6th grade raised 2,390.26, more than half the amount needed to purchase a home water system for one family on the Navajo Nation.

Week of May 1st: Teachers at Hancock had a fun filled week participating in “THE CONTEST”. One of the missions was to show kindness among the staff. Teachers enjoyed sharing treats, positive notes around the school, running errands for each other, and competed in an after school competition for a “secret prize”. Connie Hull and Sue Dunham were the masterminds behind “The CONTEST”. Thank you so much for all the fun! A big shout out to the 6th grade team “Chaos Coordinators” who won the secret prize!
Check out our 5th grade students.
The 5th graders at Hancock Elementary were able to learn more about the Civil War with a presentation from “We Make History.” Students learned that all you needed were your top and bottom two front teeth in order to join the war! They had a great time hearing about what life was like in the 1860’s.
The CUSD administration and Governing Board presented the annual “state of the district” message to community leaders on January 25 in the Governing Board Room. The annual report provides an overview of the district, academic performance, recognition of students and staff, budget information and an update on expenditures from bond elections.
