Third Grade Curriculum
English Language Arts
Third graders continue with a full Spalding program of 30 spelling words, 70 phonograms, grammar and handwriting. Third grade begins learning Spalding cursive and it is used in all of their work once letter formations are secure. As in the lower grades, HMH Journeys is the chosen reading program. Third grade also offers above grade level reading for students needing an additional challenge.
As in all of our grades, students are working above level in math. In fourth grade, the children will complete the development of Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Fractions, measurement and Data and Geometry. Students focus on 4 critical areas: continuing to develop understanding and fluency with whole number multiplication and division, and developing an understanding of multi-digit whole number division; developing their understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, multiplication of fractions and division of whole numbers with fractional answers; developing an understanding of area; and understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified using properties. An accurate and speedy grasp of basic facts becomes essential to free the mind for these complex concepts.
