Hancock Elementary is proud to offer many before and after school opportunities for academic and extra-curricular exploration through these clubs and activities: Student Council The Hancock Student Council includes members from the 4th - 6th grade. Each grade has 2 class representatives that inform their class on student council sponsored events, spirit days, and fundraisers. Click here to visit the Student Council Calendar. Academic Club / Tutoring Hancock encourages students to participate in a number of tutoring programs on campus. Math and Science Club Hancock Elementary has partnered with college students from the American Medical Student Association at ASU to form a Math and Science Club. The ASU students come each week and perform science experiments or math games/activities with 3-5 grade students at Hancock. The forty Hancock students are very excited each week to interact and learn from the ASU students. The goal of the club is to engage children from an early age in S.T.E.M. activities and build an excitement for the areas of math and science. Kindness Club Kindness Club is a student club for grades 4-6. Student representatives are selected within the classroom. Kindness Club members meet monthly to review "kind acts" nominations and select winners for each month. At monthly assemblies, Kindness Club members honor the kind acts with a PowerPoint presentation of the student's picture and reason for kind act as well as giving each student a "Caught You Being Kind" t-shirt. Art Club "Young Rembrandts" Young Rembrandts teaches basic drawing skills, art techniques and vocabulary. We provide all materials and teach new lessons each week in a positive and nurturing environment, which brings out the best in each child. You’ll see increased art abilities, learning skills, self-confidence and self-esteem. Cartooning takes drawing to another level by teaching students how to put excitement and movement on paper. Battle of the Books All fifth and sixth graders are invited to join the Battle of the Books club. Our BOB club meets at least once each week at lunchtime to discuss the books we are reading. Students read four books each quarter for three quarters. A competition is held after each intersession break with questions about the four books from the previous quarter. The team with the most accumulated points at the end of the third quarter goes on to the District Semi-finals competition. Students that sign-up must stay on their three-member team for all three quarters. Heat Harmony Chorus The Hancock Heat Harmony Chorus meets on Tuesdays from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. in the Music Room (Room 14). Choir members include 4th, 5th and 6th Grade students at Hancock. No audition is required - if your mouth can make a sound and you like to sing, you're in! We will begin meeting 2nd Quarter. Watch for fliers toward the end of September! We will perform in December, February at the District Choral Festival and then again before Spring Break. There is no Choir 4th Quarter due to after school clubs, sports, and the Artist in Residence Program. Running Club Running Club has been organized to promote fitness and encourage sportsmanship and positive mental attitude. We will be teaching basic techniques, skills, and strategies of running. We will also stress important values, such as dedication, commitment, and perseverance. The students will participate in different running activities and games. The club will also participate in several races against other Chandler schools. Having fun, trying your best, and good sportsmanship are stressed at all times. The Hancock Running Club is open to any student in Kindergarten through 6th grade. World Drumming Club Students in the club learn about cultures and music from around the world by playing authentic drums and other instruments. Students learn to sing songs and play rhythms from each culture and participate in "drumming circles" as well as other traditional percussion ensembles. The World Drumming Club is available to students in 5th and 6th grade and will begin in September. News Club The Hancock News Club will meet two times each month to create a monthly Hancock News publication. The News Club is open to 5th and 6th Grade students at Hancock and meets in the Computer Lab on Tuesdays between 8:00 and 8:30 AM. Students will learn to research, write, edit and publish articles about activities and events at Hancock! Last Modified on January 31, 2013
